Os critérios para o tratamento profiláctico da enxaqueca são23:

1. Enxaqueca recorrentes que na opinião do doente interfiram significativamente com as actividades diárias de rotina

2. Crises de enxaqueca frequentes (mais de duas por mês e que provoquem no total três ou mais dias de incapacidade). Mesmo doentes com menos de duas crises de enxaqueca por mês podem sofrer de incapacidade suficientemente grave que requeira tratamento profiláctico

3. Uso excessivo de terapêutica aguda para a enxaqueca (mais de duas vezes por semana)
4. Terapêutica aguda contra-indicada, ineficaz ou não tolerada
5. Preferência do doente
